Un artista autodidatta, Bard ha dedicato la sua carriera a dipingere "portraits" delle barche a vapore e navi a vela che attraversavano il fiume Hudson e le acque che circondano Manhattan. Riceveva spesso commissioni da costruttori di barche e operatori. Questo raro doppio ritratto rappresenta il suo più grande lavoro conosciuto, con la barca a vapore Thomas Hunt e lo yacht America - quest'ultimo è tornato a New York dall'Inghilterra dopo la sua vittoria celebrata nell'agosto 1851 nella prima gara di Coppa America. Bard catturò la competizione tra vela e vapore, celebrando i progressi compiuti nella progettazione e nell'ingegneria di queste navi.
