James Earl probabilmente imparò i fondamenti della pittura in questo paese prima di andare a Londra intorno al 1784. Ha esposto alla Royal Academy prima di essere iscritto come studente nel 1789. Tra il 1794-6 fu a Charleston dove morì. Secondo il suo obituario possedeva “una struttura non comune nel colpire la somiglianza... e una particolarità nella sua esecuzione di drappeggi.” Nato a Charleston nel 1746, Pinckney ricevette la sua formazione ad Oxford e al Middle Temple. Un generale di guerra rivoluzionario, Pinckney ebbe una carriera militare e politica distinta. Il ritratto di Earl cattura Pinckney in tutta la sua regalia militare e incorpora il forte sull'isola di Sullivan, la scena della prima vittoria americana sugli inglesi nel 1776.
