Membro attivo della seconda generazione di pittori della scuola del fiume Hudson, Hart nacque in Scozia e si trasferì a New York come un bambino con i suoi genitori. Studiò in Germania, poi tornò negli Stati Uniti nel 1853 e aprì uno studio ad Albany prima di trasferirsi a New York. Questo dipinto, come paesaggi barocco-era, addomestica e cornici natura.
