Il titolo di questa scena autunnale, raffigurante una mandria di cervo avvistato in allerta dal crescente volo di oche su un lago di montagna, fa doppio riferimento ai soggetti scozzesi di arte popolare del XIX secolo, e ai selvatici americani. Potrebbe essere stato dipinto ovunque dalle Highlands Hudson a New York alle White Mountains nel New Hampshire. Il suo fascino deriva dal romanticismo delle creature selvagge in un luogo selvaggio. James Macdougal Hart era un artista scozzese-americano, e il fratello minore del pittore William Hart. La famiglia venne in America nel 1830, e James fu apprendistato ad un pittore di cartello ad Albany, New York. Studiò con gli artisti della Düsseldorf School in Germania all'inizio del 1850 e tornò a stabilirsi a New York. Ha esposto ampiamente, è diventato un membro dell'Accademia Nazionale e ha servito come vice presidente. Sposò il pittore Marie Theresa Gorsuch nel 1866. Il loro figlio William Gorsuch Hart divenne anche un artista.
