Nel Musaeo leggiamo: “Noto che Brueghel ha dipinto sulla pergamena un topo con alcuni steli di rose e insetti. Volevo richiamare particolare attenzione a questa pergamena e renderlo noto che il suo valore può riposare sul fatto che anche i topi in esso sono piacevoli da guardare” In realtà, questo capolavoro in miniatura non è su pergamena ma su rame, ed è molto probabile che il “trifle, di piccola importazione” che Brueghel menziona in una lettera al cardinale nel 1605.
