Il conte Johan Maurits di Nassau-Siegen trascorse diversi anni come governatore della colonia olandese in Brasile. Ha portato buon governo alla colonia e ha ottenuto artisti e scienziati per studiare il nuovo mondo. Ma Johan Maurits era anche l'uomo responsabile di aver attirato gli olandesi nel commercio internazionale degli schiavi. Egli gestiva che gli uomini e le donne africane schiavi erano messi a lavorare come schiavi sulle piantagioni di zucchero in Brasile. In questo ritratto vediamo Johan Maurits come detentore della città di Kleef, situato proprio sopra il confine olandese-tedesco. È stato dipinto dal pittore ritratto dell'Aia Jan de Baen ed è uno dei pochi dipinti del Mauritshuis ancora nella sua cornice originale del XVII secolo.
