Esistono diverse versioni e copie di questo dipinto, di cui quello nel Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna è considerato il primo, o il più vicino ad esso.Si ritiene che il trattamento originale della composizione sia stato eseguito circa 1527.Il testo inciso intorno al bordo della nicchia si basa sul versetto di Genesi 3:15: MVLIERIS SEMEN IHS SERPENTIS CAPVT CONTRIVIT, le parole di Dio che si rivolge al serpente dopo la Caduta: "questo [il seme della donna] ammazzerà la testa".Gossaert fa il riferimento a Cristo esplicito nel modo in cui il Bambino va avanti, mentre si guarda indietro alla parola serpentis.
