L'eremita egiziana Sant'Antonio (c. 251-356) è affondata nella preghiera. Intorno a lui tutti i tipi di esseri diabolici cercano di tentarlo lontano dalla sua pietà. Alla sinistra superiore è anche trascinato in aria. Tuttavia, egli è svincolato da tutto, secondo il racconto contemporaneo sopravvissuto della sua vita da san Atanasio. Anthony resistette alle molte prove demoniache e sopravvisse all'età di 105 anni. Venne venerato per secoli come patrono che diede protezione contro le malattie contagiose. È anche considerato il padre fondatore della vita monastica. Jan Mandijn, nato a Haarlem ma lavorato ad Anversa, ha tratto la sua ispirazione per questo lavoro da un dipinto dello stesso nome di Hieronymus Bosch (c.1450-1516), che ora è a Lisbona.
