Secondo il Nuovo Testamento, Matteo era un pubblicano che ricevette una convocazione da Cristo per abbandonare il suo cammino di vita e diventare apostolo. Van Hemessen immaginava la scena come un vortice vorticoso di arti facendo gesti contrastanti in un dramma in miniatura. L'esame tecnico ha rivelato che questa versione è una copia di alta qualità dell'originale di Van Hemessen a Vienna, che indica la persistente popolarità dei suoi dipinti innovativi sul mercato dell'arte di Anversa.
