Commissioned in 1435 by Chancellor Rolin, "Prime Minister" of the Duke of Burgundy This painting adorned the Notre-Dame d'Autun church (destroyed in 1793). It is a Virgin and Child, who, like an apparition, reveals herself to the chancellor in prayer. The scene takes place in a luxurious room worthy of an Italian Renaissance palace. However, many symbols are integrated into it to give the religious climate of the theme: decoration of the paving by the eight-pointed star, evoking the virginity of Mary; triple arcades evoking the Trinity; historiated passages from the Old Testament on the capitals of the columns…
