Algunas flores se han establecido con aparente nonchalance en la esquina de una mesa de mármol. El llamativo es una gran rosa con pétalos frágiles. Dos mariposas se alumbran en la flor. Esta pequeña pintura forma un par con una fruta muerta. Juntos, son únicos en la obra de Jan van Huysum, que pintó sobre todo ramos grandes y lujosos. Las vidas de Van Huysum eran muy populares: era uno de los pintores más altos pagados de su día.
