Tanto el sitter como el artista de esta obra recibieron el prestigioso Prix de Roma para la pintura de la historia, permitiéndoles vivir y estudiar durante varios años en la Villa Medici, sede de la Academia Francesa en Roma. Ahí, Alaux pintó un grupo de retratos de compañeros laureados en sus habitaciones privadas. En este ejemplo, Pallière toca una guitarra en un espacio decorado con los dibujos, castas y libros que hablan de su educación artística en curso. Una imagen mucho más íntima que las comisiones públicas de estos artistas completaron, el retrato es un testimonio de amistad en un capítulo fundamental en la vida de dos jóvenes pintores.
