La figura maschile principale di questo dipinto è vestita in un costume antico e formale che nel XVIII secolo sarebbe stato appropriato per un soggetto dall'antichità. Tipico di Watteau, la scena è completamente immaginaria e non si allinea con qualsiasi opera nota o gioco. L’ingresso dal retroscena di Crispin, uno dei personaggi stock della commedia dell’arte, sottolinea l’improbabilità della scena. La rifletografia a infrarossi mostra un sottofondo preparatorio sulla tela, probabilmente da un pittore di architettura specializzato, una pratica che Watteau spesso impiegato per creare tali spazi scenici.
