Depicting a scene from Homer’s Iliad, in which Thetis begs Jupiter to intervene in the Trojan War, saving the life of her son Achilles, this paint was poorly received by the Paris Salon. La pintura, a más de 11 por 8 pies, es un lienzo inmenso, y está impregnada de las tradiciones del arte clásico del que Ingres estaba tan enamorado.
