Dieses Porträt von Leblanc und das seiner Frau (19.77.2) wurden 1823 gemalt, kurz nachdem Ingres das Paar in Florenz traf. Madame Leblanc war Lady-in-waiting zur Großherzogin der Toskana, Napoleons Schwester Elisa Baciocchi; Monsieur Leblanc war ihr Sekretär. Ingres beschrieb ihn als "ein Franzose, sehr reich und auch recht großzügig und gut, die uns angenommen hat, zum Punkt überwältigend uns mit Freundlichkeiten und auch mit Anträgen auf Gemälde, Porträts, etc." Edgar Degas, der diese Porträts 1854 erstmals sah, beschrieb seine Akquisition von ihnen 1896 als "das Ereignis meines Lebens als Sammler". Die Metropolitan kaufte sie 1918 von Degas Immobilienverkauf.
