Questo ritratto di Leblanc e quello di sua moglie (19.77.2) furono dipinti nel 1823, poco dopo che Ingres incontrò la coppia a Firenze. Madame Leblanc era stata lady-in-waiting alla Granduchessa di Toscana, sorella di Napoleone Elisa Baciocchi; Monsieur Leblanc era la sua segretaria. Ingres lo ha descritto come "un francese, molto ricco e anche abbastanza generoso e buono, che ci ha adottato, al punto di schiacciarci con gentilezza e anche con richieste di dipinti, ritratti, ecc." Edgar Degas, che per la prima volta vide questi ritratti nel 1854, descrisse la sua acquisizione nel 1896 come "l'evento della mia vita da collezionista". Il Metropolitan li acquistò dalla vendita di proprietà di Degas nel 1918.
