Il sitter era un artista che esponeva regolarmente al Salone ed era anche autore di manuali di disegno popolari. All'epoca Ingres la dipinse, sposò uno dei suoi allievi, Clément Boulanger (1805-1842). Tracce di un bordo di curvatura sulla superficie della tela indicano che il ritratto era stato incorniciato come un ovale prima Ingres ha aggiunto la dedizione a lei come Madame Cavé, che deve aver avuto luogo un decennio dopo, dopo che si risposò. Il ritratto del 1844 di Ingres di Monsieur Cavé (43.85.2) fu concepito come un ciondolo all'opera attuale.
