Ingres fece questo piccolo dipinto devozionale gioiello come regalo per il suo amico Louise Marcotte; introdusse l'artista a Delphine Ramel, che sposò nel 1852. La Vergine appare dietro un altare, affiancato da due santi in adorazione dell'Eucaristia. La composizione rende omaggio alla lunga tradizione di dipinti intimi realizzati per la devozione religiosa, in particolare l'arte di Raffaello dei primi del 1500.
