Nel 1828 Corot tornò in Francia dall'Italia e dipinse la Cattedrale di Chartres nel 1830. La sua incisione e luminosità molto originali seguono i suoi esperimenti in Italia. L'artista rielaborò questo dipinto nel 1872. Il dipinto (64 x 51 cm) è ora nella collezione del Museo del Louvre, Parigi.
