1828 kehrte Corot aus Italien nach Frankreich zurück und malte 1830 die Kathedrale von Chartres. Seine sehr originelle Friaming und Luminosität folgen seinen Experimenten in Italien. Der Künstler hat dieses Gemälde 1872 überarbeitet. Das Gemälde (64 x 51 cm) befindet sich jetzt in der Sammlung des Musée du Louvre, Paris.
