En 1828, Corot retourne en France d'Italie et peint la cathédrale de Chartres en 1830. Son cadre très original et sa luminosité font suite à ses expériences en Italie. L'artiste retravailla cette peinture en 1872. La peinture (64 x 51 cm) est maintenant dans la collection du Musée du Louvre, Paris.
