Corot a peint ce croquis vif mais assuré pendant qu'il était un élève de Jean-Victor Bertin et l'a gardé jusqu'à sa mort. Il représente la mère et la soeur de Corot, debout par un grand peuplier italien qui marquait l'entrée de la propriété familiale à Ville d'Avignon, près de Paris.
