Los pintores visitaron Roma y el campo circundante para grabar la belleza natural del paisaje y sus monumentos antiguos. El Cascata delle Marmore combina ambos, habiendo sido diseñado en el siglo III a.C. para desviar el río Velino hacia el Nera, un afluente del Tiber. Corot visitó la cascada en el verano de 1826, alcanzando un dominio de la técnica de plein-air que se caracteriza por el candor, el naturalismo y la estructura aparentemente intuitiva de este boceto. Corot no exhibió tales obras informales, pero trató de infundir las pinturas que comenzó a mostrar en el Salón el año siguiente con la misma sensibilidad vigorosa.
