I pittori visitarono Roma e la campagna circostante per registrare la bellezza naturale del paesaggio e dei suoi antichi monumenti. La Cascata delle Marmore combina entrambi, essendo stata progettata nel III secolo a.C. per deviare il fiume Velino nel Nera, affluente del Tevere. Corot visitò la cascata nell'estate 1826, raggiungendo una padronanza della tecnica plein-aria che è caratterizzata dal candore, dal naturalismo e dalla struttura apparentemente intuitiva di questo disegno. Corot non ha esposto opere così informali, ma ha cercato di infondere i dipinti che ha cominciato a mostrare al Salone l'anno successivo con la stessa vigorosa sensibilità.
