Quando il diciassettenne Corot mostrò A Woman Reading al Salon del 1869, il critico Théophile Gautier lodò la sua naïveté e il suo colore, ma criticò il disegno difettoso della donna, notando la rarità delle figure nel lavoro di Corot. Anche se l'artista aveva dipinto studi simili per circa un decennio, questo era il primo e uno dei pochi che ha esposto. Corot tornò sulla tela poco dopo il Salon; rielaborò il paesaggio ma lasciò intatta la figura.
