Der Schriftsteller Théophile Thoré wiederholte seine gewohnheitsmäßige Kritik an Corot im Jahre 1865, das Datum dieses Bildes: "Corot hat fast nie etwas neben derselben Landschaft gemacht, aber es ist gut." Die Landschaft hier wurde von Corot in seinem Studio von Bestandselementen konzipiert, die er von Herzen kannte: der Cluster von silbernen Bäumen, der Körper von Leitungswasser, die Bauernfiguren und Bootsmann, der entfernte Turm. Wie sein Idol Claude Lorrain konnte Corot durch seine Fantasie eine Landschaft und Stimmung erzeugen.
