In den 1860er und 70er Jahren stellte Corot oft junge, Arbeiterklasse Pariser in exotischen Kostümen vor, vielleicht evozieren Bauern, die er in Italien 1825–28 gemalt hatte. Die Einführung von Studio-Profis, jedoch, situieren die späteren Werke eher quadratisch in der Tradition der Genre Malerei. In dieser Arbeit lädt das ausdruckslose Gesicht des Modells Spekulation über ihren Geisteszustand ein, das Buch, das sie vorübergehend nicht mehr gelesen hat, und den angespannten Himmel.
