Vuillard genossen einen engen Rapport mit einer Reihe seiner Patronen. In den 1890er Jahren befreundete er Thadée und Misia Natanson, aber nachdem sie sich 1904 geschieden hatten, verlagerte er seine Anhaftung an den Kunsthändler Jos Hessel und seine Frau Lucie, der den Künstler jeden Abend um sechs erhielt. Dies ist eine von vielen informellen, intimen Gemälden der Hessels in ihrer Pariser Wohnung.
