Nel 1736 de Troy intraprese sette enormi disegni preparatori per arazzi che rappresentavano la storia dell'Antico Testamento di Esther che erano tessuti alla manifattura arazzo di Gobelins. Una quantità significativa delle commissioni dei pittori di storia è venuto da arazzi, che sono stati considerati di scala adeguata e prestigio per tali soggetti. Questo bozzetto di olio preliminare per una delle serie Esther di de Troy raffigura il suo parente e padre adottivo, Mordecai, cavalcando trionfalmente per le strade di Susa (attuale Iran). I costumi erano doppiamente immaginari, come de Troy interpretato ed esotico sia storico che medio-orientale vestito. Dopo aver elaborato i rapporti delle figure in questa dimensione ridotta, dipinse successivamente un modello su larga scala (1738–39; Musée du Louvre, Parigi) prima che i primi arazzi fossero intrecciati tra il 1741 e il 1744.
