Millet scrisse al suo patrono Frédéric Hartmann il 18 febbraio 1873 che aveva quasi completato questa foto per il croupier Durand-Ruel: "È una collina, con un singolo albero quasi nudo di foglie, e che ho cercato di posizionare piuttosto lontano nella foto. Le figure sono una donna vista da dietro e alcuni tacchini. Ho anche cercato di indicare il villaggio sullo sfondo su un piano inferiore." L'ambiente è vicino a Barbizon, dove Millet visse dal 1849 fino alla sua morte. La torre della vicina frazione di Chailly-en-Bière è visibile in lontananza.
