Millet escribió a su patrón Frédéric Hartmann el 18 de febrero de 1873 que casi había completado esta imagen para el distribuidor Durand-Ruel: "Es una colina, con un solo árbol casi desnuda de hojas, y que he intentado colocar bastante atrás en la imagen. Las figuras son una mujer vista desde atrás y algunos pavos. También he intentado indicar el pueblo en el fondo en un plano inferior". El escenario está cerca de Barbizon, donde Millet vivió desde 1849 hasta su muerte. La torre de la aldea vecina de Chailly-en-Bière es visible a la distancia.
