Tra il 1890 e il 1892, Gérôme fece variazioni sia dipinte che scolpite sul tema di Pygmalion e Galatea, la storia raccontata nelle Metamorfosi di Ovid. Tutti raffigurano il momento in cui la scultura di Galatea è stata portata in vita dalla dea Venere, in adempimento del desiderio di Pygmalion per una moglie bella come la scultura che ha creato. Si tratta di una delle tre versioni conosciute in olio che sono strettamente legate a una scultura in marmo policromo, anch'essa disegnata da Gérôme (Castello Hearst, San Simeon, Calif). In ciascuno dei dipinti, la scultura appare ad un angolo diverso, come se fosse vista in tondo.
