Questa foto di arresto fu fatta dopo che Gérôme tornò a Parigi da un viaggio di dodici settimane verso il Vicino Oriente nel 1868. Era al culmine della sua carriera quando ha vestito un modello nel suo studio con capi e accessori che aveva acquistato all'estero. Il titolo turco dell'artista per questa foto, che si traduce come "senza testa", evoca i soldati ausiliari poco pagati che hanno combattuto ferocemente per saccheggiare sotto la guida ottomana, anche se è difficile immaginare che quest'uomo carica in battaglia indossando una tunica di seta così squisita. Il trattamento virtuoso delle texture di Gérôme fornisce un sontuoso contrappunto al cuscinetto dignitoso della figura.
