El título turco de Gérôme para esta imagen, que se traduce como "sin cabeza", evoca a los soldados auxiliares mal pagados que lucharon ferozmente por el saqueo bajo el liderazgo otomano. Para crearlo, el artista planteó un modelo en su estudio de París con prendas y accesorios que había adquirido en el extranjero. Poco después de su finalización, el presente trabajo fue adquirido por John Taylor Johnston (1820-1893), el primer presidente del Museo Metropolitano.
