Il titolo turco di Gérôme per questa foto, che si traduce come "senza testa", evoca i soldati ausiliari che hanno combattuto ferocemente per saccheggiare sotto la guida ottomana. Per crearlo, l'artista ha posato un modello nel suo studio di Parigi indossando capi e accessori che aveva acquistato all'estero. Poco dopo il suo completamento, l'opera attuale fu acquisita da John Taylor Johnston (1820-1893), il primo presidente del Metropolitan Museum.
