L’immagine di Tocqué raffigura Jean Marc Nattier, pittore di ritratti molto alla moda, che lavora al suo cavalletto. Tocqué studiò con Nattier nel 1720 e sposò la figlia di Nattier nel 1747. Mentre il volto è portato ad un alto grado di risoluzione, le mani, la tavolozza e l'abbigliamento del sitter sono lasciati volutamente incompiuti, evocando il processo artistico e la creatività prima della tela. Questo schizzo animato probabilmente risale al 1740 circa, e servì come ispirazione per il pezzo di ricevimento di Tocqué, firmato e datato 1762, per la Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. L'accettazione in diverse accademie in diverse capitali europee ha attestato la reputazione e la clientela internazionali di un artista.
