En esta escena pastoral, Bertin emplea figuras reunidas alrededor de un viejo poeta a la derecha inferior, tanto para animar el paisaje como para evocar la edad dorada de la antigüedad clásica. Su visión idealizada de la naturaleza es mucho en la forma de artistas franceses activos en Roma en el siglo XVII, en particular Claude Lorrain. A finales del siglo XVIII, pinturas como esta fueron llevadas en vogue por el maestro de Bertin, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, y servían como piedras táctiles a los alumnos de Bertin, en particular Achille-Etna Michallon y Camille Corot.
