Nel 1873 Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux prestò servizio alla giuria per un concorso sponsorizzato dal quotidiano francese Le Figaro, riesaminando proposte di scultura che decorerebbero il suo nuovo edificio. Ispirato al progetto, Carpeaux creò la sua figura di Figaro, il carattere spiritoso e ingegnoso della commedia e dell'opera settecentesca. L'atteggiamento grazioso di questa figura è caratteristico di Carpeaux
