In soggetti di genere moralizzanti come questo, Greuze ha bypassato la materia tematica arcana della pittura di storia per fare appello a un vasto pubblico. Al Salon del 1757, un critico dichiarò anche che la posa di questa giovane serva, la cui perdita di verginità è simboleggiata dalle uova rotte, era degna di un pittore di storia. Greuze colpì su tali soggetti, basandosi in parte sulla pittura olandese del XVII secolo, mentre ancora uno studente a Roma, anche se avrebbe trascorso i prossimi decenni testardamente inseguendo il titolo ufficiale del pittore di storia.
