Guidata dall’Imperatrice Caterina la Grande, l’élite russa del Settecento commissionò e raccolse opere di pittori, scultori e artigiani più famosi di Parigi. Varvara Nikolaevna Golitsyna e suo marito il principe Sergei Sergeyevich Gagarin sembrano aver visitato Parigi durante un viaggio in luna di miele in Europa nei primi anni 1780, commissionando ritratti da Greuze e, durante il loro soggiorno a Londra, un ritratto di famiglia di Sir Joshua Reynolds. Il semplice vestito di cotone bianco, strettamente associato con la regina Maria Antonietta, era allora l'altezza della moda parigina, e presto si diffuse tra le capitali europee.
