L’abbigliamento e i capelli scivolosi si uniscono agli occhi risvolti e ad una testa inclinata per condensare un’emozione – forse dolorosa aspirazione – tipica delle têtes d’expression. Tali "testimoni esplosivi" facevano parte della formazione accademica degli artisti, ma hanno anche apprezzato l'appello come opere d'arte indipendenti. Questa particolare posa cattura l'ascesa tardo settecentesca del sentimentalismo, un movimento in gran parte letterario che ha attirato le emozioni dei lettori, che Greuze ha usato a grande effetto visivo.
