Il soggetto non poteva essere molto più umile: un cesto di vimini con le prugne e posto su una sporgenza di pietra in mezzo a uno spargimento di noci, ciliegie e ribes. In un'epoca in cui la pittura francese era conosciuta per le sue imponenti e decorative abbellimenti, le nature morte e le scene di genere di Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin erano rinomate per la loro semplicità e direttività. Anche se considerato troppo modesto per essere classificato accanto alle opere stravaganti di François Boucher, dipinti di Chardin affascinato molti dei suoi contemporanei.
