Fragonards so genannte Fantasie-Portraits sind elektrische Leistungen: mit Virtuosität, Panache und Geschwindigkeit gebürstet, er hat die Oberfläche neu bearbeitet, während die Farbe nass blieb, einschließlich durch Incising Linien in die große weiße Ruff. Das Theaterkostüm erinnert an Queen Maria de’ Medici Gericht Kleid aus über einem Jahrhundert früher, wie in einer Reihe von Gemälden von Peter Paul Rubens, die Fragonard sah in den französischen königlichen Sammlungen. Eine kürzlich entdeckte Zeichnung ermöglicht es, diese Frau als aristokratische Salon Gastgeberin Marie Emilie Coignet de Courson zu identifizieren. Fragonards farbenprächtige Performance lässt sie jedoch auffallen, so dass diese Art von Künstlers Selbstporträt.
