Die Geschichte dieser Gemälde – eine der mächtigsten Evokationen der Liebe in der Kunstgeschichte – ist mit der Karriere der Comtesse du Barry (1743-1793), der letzten Herrin von Louis XV (1710-1774) verbunden. Für ein Vergnügen Pavillon beauftragte sie den Architekten Claude-Nicolas Ledoux (1736-1806) im Jahre 1771, die Gräfin bestellt von Fragonard vier Leinwände darstellen
