El tema de este retrato es el sobrino del amigo de Gericault, el pintor Pierre-Joseph Dedreux-Dorcy. Este lienzo es uno de un pequeño grupo de dibujos y pinturas (en varias colecciones) que representan al Alfred de ocho o nueve años de edad y a su hermana menor, Elisabeth, con notable autoposo y gracia para su edad. Alfred se convirtió en pintor y, como Gericault, estaba enamorado de caballos. Eugène Delacroix, que había estudiado con Gericault, posteriormente poseía esta pintura.
