Blanche Selwyn ha iniziato la sua carriera in vaudeville britannico, ma presto migrato negli Stati Uniti dove ha avuto grande successo come impersonatrice maschile. Nel 1873 Selwyn sposò il suo secondo marito e socio d'affari, Ben Gilfoil. Alla fine degli anni 1870 Selwyn possedeva e gestiva la sua compagnia di varietà. Le udienze amavano la parodia di Gilfoil dell’impersonazione maschile di Selwyn. A differenza dei britannici Blondes, gli impersonatori maschili come Selwyn hanno ricevuto poche recensioni negative. L'America è lieta di questa forma di travestitismo.
