Il padre di Harriet Goodhue Hosmer, un medico del Massachusetts, notò il suo talento con argilla e la iscrisse in un corso di anatomia al St. Louis Medical College. Salpò per l'Italia nel 1852 per studiare con lo scultore John Gibson. Hosmer specializzato in sculture in marmo di grandezza naturale di eroine tragiche. Fu la prima scultrice nordamericana a ricevere una commissione da qualsiasi chiesa di Roma. Hosmer ha inventato macchinari e processi ideati come la conversione di calcare in marmo. Dopo una relazione con la scrittrice Matilda Hays, Hosmer divenne la compagna di Louisa Caroline Stewart-Mackenzie, Lady Ashburton, per 25 anni.
