Questo piccolo lavoro meticolosamente dipinto è un tipico esempio dello stile manierista, che era di moda intorno al 1600. Lo stile è caratterizzato da figure nude in pose aggraziate complesse. Joachim Wtewael ha dipinto questo lavoro su rame liscio, che si presta bene a dipingere dettagli fini. Rappresenta l'adulterio di Venere e Marte. Il marito di Venere Vulcano – in piedi con le spalle a noi sulla sinistra – ha catturato la coppia nell’atto, e sta esponendo l’inganno agli dei che si sono riuniti intorno.
