Fin dai primi anni del XIX secolo, la nave sul lungomare e il cantiere di legname raffigurato in questa vista è stato conosciuto come Larsens Plads, o Larsen's Place, dopo il suo fondatore, Lars Larsen. Dahl dipinse per la prima volta questa prospettiva nel 1816 (Kurpfälzisches Museum, Heidelberg), ma nel riprenderla per l'opera attuale raddoppiò le dimensioni della tela, omettendo dettagli incidentali e aumentando il suo effetto atmosferico. Questa scena placida, concepita come il ciondolo ad una natura molto più selvaggia, il Paesaggio tirolese con una Cascata (1823; collezione privata), rimase invenduta alla morte dell’artista.
