El majestuoso cuadro, dividido en tres paneles superpuestos, fue colgado originalmente por encima del sepulcro de mármol que Ulrich von Liechtenstein, príncipe obispo de Trento, había encargado por sí mismo en la catedral en 1504, un año antes de su muerte. La obra, atribuida anteriormente a Dürer y a Giacomo da Vicenza, fue atribuida posteriormente a un artista anónimo, probablemente del Norte, que fue influenciado por la pintura renacentista italiana de la región del Véneto.
